Turret Lathes and Engine Lathes

A lathe machine can be used for a variety of purposes, including metal cutting. Turret lathes are commonly used for machining parts with complex shapes. This machine is equipped with a multi-position rotating turret which holds tools for working exterior and interior surfaces by:

  • Turning
  • Boring
  • Drilling
  • Reaming
  • Knurling

The basic purpose of lathe machines is to minimize human labor and increase machine efficiency. A turret lathe allows the ability to automate a production run and ultimately refining the process. Lathes, which are used for metal cutting in industrial processes, are normally required to produce products on a mass scale. Tooling is set up away from the lathe in order to increase labor productivity. Stops are also adjusted to the required dimensions away from the lathe on a quick-change, preset drum, which is mounted on the lathe. Turret lathes are used in small-scale and lot production.

A single product requires several machining operations which in turn would require several different kinds of tools to carry out these operations. If an operator were to manually adjust each tool after every single operation, this would consume a lot of time. With this limitation in mind, there was a demand for a machine where everything could be fitted and configured in one step while being able to perform several automated functions. This need was fulfilled when the turret lathe was designed.

Engine Lathes

An engine lathe is a common, manually operated metal turning lathe. Engine lathes were common in blacksmith shops during the 19th and 20th centuries and are still used today. An engine lathe can be used to drill and bore holes, square blocks, machine dies, make parts (pins, bushings and shafts) for tools and machines. A lathe can even spin sheet metal. The modern machine shop utilizes certain machines, which are often antiques, tending to need replacement parts. These replacement parts can be made by an engine lathe.
